In christian tradition, people often commissioned votive paintings after a traumatic event, (such as severe illness or an accident) to thank saints for their intervention. This place can be familiar, like a room in our house.&nbsp; For imagining an individual’s existence as a larger or smaller room reveals to us that most people are only acquainted with one corner of their particular room, a place by the window, a little area to pace up and down. That way, they have a certain security. It can also be the whole world. We open a door to go out, to come in, or just to take a peek. We open doors because we need to leave something behind. But doors are not only passageways. They also serve to guard, protect, hide - an half-open door is as appealing as it is terrifying, but above all it is an invitation. On the other side, not only places await us, but also other beings. We may discover that even these beings are portals to the unknown. (…) we are not prisoners. These were developed throughout the course of their year living together in Estremoz, in the portuguese countryside. The exhibition reflects on their time living close to nature, adopting a slow and contemplative way of life. Through a series of workshops, Clara and students from a local primary school (ages 9-10), wrote and illustrated a story. Their drawings were made into a 3D puzzle which informed the sculpture. The creature, large enough to swallow a human, shows a terrifying grin while at the same time providing water for three people to bathe under. It’s unclear whether the person inside its belly has been swallowed or is about to be born. This ambiguous being evokes the realm of fables, where the unprecedented, the humorous and the poetic go hand in hand with the wonderful. She was deeply inspired by the craftsmanship she had the privilege to witness and was struck by the painstaking detail of Indian miniature paintings. She was particularly attracted to the motif of the tree represented again and again throughout textiles and paintings.
