About

Clara Leitão (Lisbon, 1995) studied Costume & Set Design at António Arroio in her hometown, Lisbon, and graduated with a BA (Hons) degree in Design for Textiles (specializing in Print) from the Heriot-Watt University, in Scotland. As part of her studies, she completed a semester abroad at the National Institute of Design, in Ahmedabad, India.

Clara creates intricate paintings on paper and three-dimensional works where she combines different techniques (such as sculpting, sewing and embroidery).

She is deeply interested in the subconscious, which she accesses through dreams, stories, myths and her own intuition. Her work explores the ties between human experience, spirituality and the natural world. Through an attention to detail and colour she creates dreamlike, sensitive atmospheres.

Clara has completed artist residencies in Denmark, Bulgaria, Austria and Portugal and often works with children, facilitating art workshops.

In 2023 she had her first solo exhibition Everything behind an open door, at Galeria Arte Periférica, in Lisbon.

She currently lives in Lisbon.
