Lobacobra (2022)

This handpainted linen panel illustrates an imaginary creature, half snake, half wolf or dog. This being, large enough to swallow a human, shows a terrifying grin while at the same time providing water for three people to bathe under. It’s unclear whether the person inside its belly has been swallowed or is about to be born.
This ambiguous being evokes the realm of fables, where the unprecedented, the humorous and the poetic go hand in hand with the wonderful. Lobacobra was awarded the first prize in the illustration category of Mostra Nacional de Jovens Criadores, in Portugal (2022).
